A recent study showed that a 10 year old a nearly 3 month old died after using Zofran (also called Ondansetron). Zofran is commonly used to treat vomiting in gastroenteritis, but is often used off-label like so many other prescription drugs. It has a United States Food and Drug Administration black box warning for risk of Q wave to T wave time interval (QT) prolongation.
In the case invovling the 10-year-old boy, he was a previously healthy and was taken to the ER with gastroenteritis symptoms. After being treated and given 2 doses of ondansetron, he became unresponsive. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. In the other case, an infant just 86 days old with previously unidentified congenital cardiomyopathy was treated in the ER for gastroenteritis. After receiving Zofran the infant experienced supraventricular tachycardia which progressed to ventricular fibrillation. Resuscitation attempts also failed on the baby.
